What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established, regulated & effective healthcare practice, which is tailored to consider each unique individual.

It can be used to treat a wide range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders, aiming to reduce symptoms and restore the body's natural equilibrium and function, enabling the individual to improve their quality of life.

A session will typically last 30 mins-1 hour. During this time an osteopath will take a case history, examine, diagnose & treat.

Osteopaths are primary care providers, trained to assess and diagnose. However, we do endeavour to work closely with GPs & other health professionals, when appropriate, to ensure you receive appropriate care.

What to Expect

The first time you see an osteopath the focus will be on understanding the problem. This involves taking a case history and examination. During the examination process, most osteopaths will ask you to undress to your underwear.

The osteopath should then discuss with you the evaluation findings and an appropriate approach to treatment. The type and number of treatments will depend upon your individual presentation and preferences.

Treatment should not be painful and rarely uncomfortable. It might include a combination of massage, stretching, joint movement (articulation), manipulation ("the clicking/popping"), cranial therapy and exercises. Some osteopaths may use other tools such as acupuncture, ultrasound and more.

Conditions treated by Osteopaths

Osteopathy is suitable for all ages, including babies and pregnant women.

Osteopaths treat people and not conditions. We also treat the whole body and not just the back. Though the following list is not exhaustive, it provides an indication of some conditions that might lead an individual to seek osteopathic treatment.
