What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is now recognised as an effective treatment for a wide range of disorders. It is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body.

Osteopathy recognises the need for medical investigation into systems when indicated. Its main strength, however, lies in the unique way in which the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the manual methods of treatment applied that suit the needs of the individual patient rather than a specific treatment for a specific problem.

Osteopathic treatment consists of gentle manipulation and stretching of the muscles, ligaments and joints. Treatment is not painful and is rarely uncomfortable.

Julia Pilkington

Julia qualified from the British School of Osteopathy in 1995 and joined her current practice - The South Norwood Osteopathic Practice - soon afterwards. She became Co-Principal in 2005 and practises both structural and cranial osteopathy (see below). As well as general osteopathic practice she has a special interest in the treatment of road traffic injuires, in particular whiplash, and has extensive experience in ante-natal and post-natal care and in the treatment of babies and children.

The South Norwood Osteopathic Practice is situated in bright purpose built practice rooms. The Practice is open six days a week, including Saturday mornings and some evenings. Please phone 0208 653 8810 and ask to make an appointment with Julia Pilkington

Conditions treated by Osteopaths

Osteopathic treatment can help many musculoskeletal conditions. These include the common aches and pains due to strains, falls and overuse, as well as the more long-term back and neck probems. It can often alleviate the problems associated with stress and tension including chronic headaches.

It can help with particular problems such as 'sciatica' and 'frozen shoulder' as well as whiplash, sports injuries and the back pain caused by pregnancy.

Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle treatment which can be effective in treating a wide range of conditions in people of all ages and is particularly useful for treatment of children. It can be helpful if a child has had a difficult birth, for unsettled babies and those suffering from colic, and for those with sleep disturbances, as well as many other common problems such as recurrent ear infections.
